Minor or Harmonic Minor Chords for Dark Hip Hop Instrumentals and Evil Beats
Dark instrumentals are mostly built with minor progressions, but if you want to add a little more darkness and make the beats pure evil, than harmonic minors are perfect.
As a music producer specializing in dark instrumentals and evil beats, there is a slight, but easy difference between using minor and harmonic minor key scales (chords) for dark and evil instrumentals. This article will help spot the difference.
An artist who's growing up in less than stable conditions (poor) with has daily struggles and conflicts is more likely going to rap over some dark instrumentals to express their feelings rather than a happy/pop beat. Next, we'll see why this works.
Why Artists Use Dark Instrumentals
Surprisingly, by the end of 2018 and continued throughout 2019, minor chords have been gaining by the number of Billboard Hits (Top 40) against the all-time chart topping major chords. Minor chords almost tied major chords! (Chart Songs Chord Details Link - Soundfly.com)
The increase of dark hip-hop instrumentals can be explained by the rising number of "online music artists" we have in today's music. A lot of today's young artists are depressed and filled with anxiety… again, perfect for minor chords. Without a label or music manager/PR team, there's no one to tell these artists to change their dark sound and start making happy music.
Making Dark Instrumentals sound Evil with Harmonic Chords
It's my belief that the seasoned artists who are more lyrically defined starting out recording over dark beats to end up in the long run using dark and evil instrumentals throughout their entire career. Examples: Tech N9ne, Eminem, Royce Da 5'9, Hopsin, NF and even Joyner Lucas)
The artists who use trap beats for catchy hooks are usually the artists who end up making the switch from dark trap beats to pop instrumentals and dancehall beats as they gain attention. And why not? Happy music sells! No one truly likes being down and depressed, but a lot of us need to hear were not alone. Thus we have the list of darker MCs, see example list prior...
Artists who use evil instrumentals on the mainstage (mainstream artists) are likely lyrical "hot spittaz" taking that once depressed and stressed out teenager that worries and turning those feelings into a volcano of power rage, what we've now termed, "Beastmode"… And you really can't have the same material impact of gripping words on a synth pop track.
TechN9ne has consistently showed a special liking towards harmonic minor key scales. And with him being one of the most evilest MC's (and his own boss), why not have over half of your album filled with evil instrumental beats!
Today's music producers like to detune their chords by tuning the notes by + or - cents (note tune values). The result using slightly off pitched harmonic minor chords make interesting and easy progressions to lay down drums for evil trap beats.

"Bad Meets Evil" (instrumental) is definitely a dark hip-hop instrumental, but this would be more of an, "Eminem Type Beat" while "Evil Twin" is more appropriate to tag as a, "Tech N9ne Type Beat" due to the more evil sounding chords.

Some of us dark music creators (artists and producers) will blow up and blossom into more of the "club bangers" and transition over to chart topping pop major chords. But the majority of us will remain content in the darkness and even some, like myself, tip toeing around our evil sides.
